wild as bucks- and I loooove it!

I was taking clean, dry cloth diapers off the line.
Ran inside to grab a basket of clean, wet diapers to hang when I heard loud squeals from the kids.

I pop out of the basement door in time to see that they had kidnapped the entire bag of balls from their bouncy pit, dumped them, and were using my clothes line as a sort of basketball goal.

If they are not messes, I don't know what they are!

The payoff is coming!!! (garden)

I was discouraged a while back with how much work my large garden was requiring and I was getting a bit pessimistic about whether or not it would pay off.

Boy, does this slow food idea require some patience!
:)
Not everything is exciting enough to take a photo of, but here are some of the highlights of my gardening week (pictures taken yesterday)

The kale is looking fantastic! It's huge!

Hola, jalapenos!
These are the size of my thumb!
Yum!

Cherry tomatoes- I can't wait to throw them in a salad!

These tomatoes are going to be delicious!
I think this one is dubbed "salsa."

Lots and lots of little cucumbers!

They're coming right along!

Yummy lettuce!
Salads taste better when you walk outside to pick them.

Yes!! That is a teeny zucchini!
And it just so happens to be overgrowing my poor carrots in the bottom right hand corner.

The bean stalks are 6 feet tall!

The peas have flowers!

Loving the sunflowers!

Jackson was soaking up some Vitamin D!
And acquiring some dirt!
:)

Precious, dusty, little piggies!

My fellow gardeners/homesteaders, how does your garden grow?

The third trimester and bedroom flooring!

He's head down and pushing his feet up and out under my rib cage!
Hence, the funny square-looking belly!

Guess who is 27 weeks?
This lady!

I cannot believe that we're officially entering the 3rd trimester.
It seems like just yesterday we decided to try for our last baby-
and I knew from having Jackson that once you already have a child, the pregnancies fly by!

When I was pregnant with Keelin, I am pretty sure I was pregnant forever- but Jackson's pregnancy flew. And this one? It feels like it's going to be over all too soon :(

Can't wait to meet Finn, but I adore being pregnant.
It will be so bittersweet to kiss my days of carrying babies goodbye!

We had our new bedroom floor installed this weekend. I can now get our furniture put in there (it has been sitting in a corner of our living room) and unleash my organizational skills!

Tim has been home for a couple of days, but leaves for another business trip in the morning. I am trying to keep from being sad about it- we are incredibly blessed that he has such an amazing job that he enjoys- but maybe it's the hormones... I just feel like the couple of days we've had together isn't enough.

We went to a couple of yard sales today- and I bought an antique, blue Mason jar for $0.25! The lady asked me if I particularly liked Mason jars and I told her yes!! She ran into her house and brought out a bag with 7 more in it and told me to just take them home with me and enjoy them. What a sweet soul! It absolutely made my day!

Foxes in broad daylight?! Fox + Hen + Dog = drama!!!

We have had to stop letting our girls free range, because in ONE day, three of our girls disappeared... as well as our handsome rooster, Heff. I knew something was after them in broad daylight and with the size of some of the chickens it did away with without leaving a single feather, I knew it was pretty serious. I'm down to 16 chickens (some injured, some butchered, some lost to various predators, etc) from 32 since April... so we're not playing around anymore.

This afternoon, Jackson and I walked out to the chicken coop to take the ladies some fruit (smushy banana and too soft peach- very appreciated, by the way!) and one of our newest hens got out- one of the ones we got off of Craigslist when her owners moved! Cake is her name and this chicken was clearly terrorized at some point in her life- she is absolutely scared to death of humans. Ugh! Makes her a nightmare to interact with, especially if I need to get within ten feet of her!

I tried to entice her back into the fenced run, but it wasn't gonna happen. She went head first into the woods. I decided to wait and see if she would come back out and let me open the door for her.

All I saw was a flash of ORANGE, saw feathers fly, and I started yelling. The fox looked at me and then ran off. No wonder I was losing chickens- it was a freakin' buffet for a fox family out there! One that is clearly not afraid to come into my yard in broad daylight.

My dogs, in their dog run since a chicken was out and they have strong prey drives, were going INSANE. I have a 65lb Boxer and a 70lb Lab. Them losing their mess did NOT help the situation- the chicken was terrified, I couldn't catch her, and I knew the fox would come back. It was ballsy enough. So I waited.

All of the sudden, the darn fox (which was HUGE, by the way) hurls itself out of the woods and starts chasing my hen around the yard. They were not 4 feet from me by the time I started yelling for Tim to get a gun. NC has pretty high instances of rabies and I wasn't screwing around anymore. Unfortunately, he didn't hear me inside the house- he was on a business call. I grabbed Jackson, our two year old, and was going to get inside- the chicken be darned- since I had no idea if it was safe to be out there at this point.

Right then, the chicken ran head first into the dog run. Max, our Boxer, was ready and waiting for something to come within his reach, so he practically swallowed her head and neck. I hurled a rock at the fox, it ran into the woods, and I ran over to Max who was trying to pull the chicken into his dog run!

I was going to be SO upset if the fox didn't get the chicken, but my dumb dog did!

I pried the chicken out of the dog's mouth and she had not a scratch on her!! I looked her over carefully and then put her in the chicken coop to go on and live another day. I, on the other hand, have decided that the foxes have gotta go. I'm setting humane traps tonight and as far as I'm concerned, we're serving their eviction notice.

*sigh*

Our own personal soap opera- "As The Coop Turns!"

Jackson, by the way, was incredibly entertained.

Toasty outside!

Baby, it's hot outside!
Mid-90's already?
What am I in for this summer?!

Kids don't seem to notice the heat, though, do they?!

My 150th post! (And strawberry yogurt pops!)

Have I really rambled on through 150 posts? Wow. :)

I decided to make some yogurt pops for the kidlets with my homemade yogurt
(I'm making about 2 batches a week right now!)
And this is how it went down:

I made one jar with a bit of my fresh jam, but it was a little sweet for my taste!
But you know I had to try it!

For the rest, I used fresh berries that I'd cut up and stored in the fridge.

Yum!

I mixed in some flax seed oil, probiotic powder, and raw honey!

I can't begin to describe how delicious it was!
Plain yogurt mixed with fresh berries and honey is just amazing!
The healthy fats from the oil and the immunity boost from the probiotic powder is just a bonus!

Some of the yogurt I saved just to eat!

The rest I froze for the kiddos!

Delicious!
